My story
How it all started with a dial-up tone
I grew up in Sydney in the early 2000s, when a Nintendo 64 was a very good afternoon and the sound of dial-up connecting meant you were about to go somewhere š¬ š¾ š®
Digital did not feel like a career then. It felt like magic.
You could sit in front of a chunky CRT monitor and suddenly find music, talk to friends, play games, or make something of your own. For a kid who liked pulling things apart and working out how they worked, I loved this time of life.
From then on, I became my household's unofficial IT department: router issues, dodgy computers, Norton Antivirus having a crisis.
That instinct eventually found its way into a range of side hustles, with the most notable being an eBay store I ran before I turned 18.
I was driving around Sydney buying old Nintendo 64s and Super Nintendos, cleaning them up, photographing them, listing them, packing them, and sending them on their way. I sold more than $20k worth of consoles, which mostly meant a lot of cardboard boxes in my room š¦
It taught me something I still come back to: ideas are easy to fall in love with. Making them useful takes more. You have to care about the details, do the unglamorous parts, and think about the person at the other end.
That has stayed with me through product, delivery and design work. I like understanding how things fit together, but I know people don't care about your internal process. They care whether something does what it says on the box, whether somebody is listening, and what happens next.
I still build things, learn as I go, and look for ways to make ideas real. Outside work, Iām usually bike riding or being kept busy by two kids and two dogs.
The technology has changed a fair bit since dial-up. The feeling has not. I still enjoy working out how things fit together, then making something useful from them.
